What are nerve conduction studies?

Electromyography and Nerve Conduction Studies (EMG/NCV) are vital diagnostic procedures used to assess nerve and muscle responses in the body. Through mild electrical stimulation, these tests elicit reactions that offer crucial insights into the functionality of nerves and muscles. They play a pivotal role in identifying abnormalities within the nervous system or musculature, aiding in the diagnosis of conditions such as nerve compression syndromes (e.g., carpal tunnel syndrome) and muscle disorders (e.g., myopathy).

How long will the process take?

The duration of the EMG/NCV test typically ranges from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the number of body parts being tested.

For a single body part, the appointment usually lasts between 30 to 45 minutes and is commonly referred to as ‘one extremity.’

When testing two body parts or extremities, the EMG/NCV session can extend up to an hour.

For tests involving three or more body parts or extremities, multiple appointments may be necessary, with the examination potentially being split into two separate sessions.

What to expect at your appointment

An EMG/NCV comprises two components. The first part of the nerve test is called Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) study. It consists of providing a small electrical stimulus to stimulate the nerve. Sensor electrodes are placed at a predetermined distance from the stimulation point. These electrodes pick up the signal after the nerve is stimulated. This helps gather data that can be used to evaluate the health of the specific nerve tested.

The second part entails a thin needle (a sensor electrode) inserted into the skin to evaluate nerve responses in the specific muscle. We use small needles to help maximize comfort during the procedure.

On the day of your appointment:

Avoid applying body lotion or oils. Clean, bare skin is necessary for the procedure.
Opt for loose-fitting clothing. If testing involves an upper extremity, such as an arm, wear a short-sleeve shirt. For lower extremities, wear loose-fitting shorts or bring them to your appointment.
Make sure to let us know of any medical concerns so that we take the best approach in your unique situation.

EMG/NCV Report

Your doctor should have the final test report a week after your appointment. For those needing a report asap, we will accommodate and get the information over within 24-48 hours. Please communicate the need for an urgent report.

What to expect during EMG/NCV test

We aim to make the test as comfortable as possible for our patients. While the procedure may involve the use of needles, we take measures to minimize discomfort and ensure your well-being throughout. It’s important to note that the sensation experienced during the test is often comparable to that of getting your blood drawn.

EMG/NCV & Medications

Most patients don’t need to stop the medication they’re currently on. However, there may be specific medications that could interfere with the test results, so it’s essential to inform your healthcare provider about any medications you’re taking. They will advise you on whether any adjustments are necessary before the test to ensure accurate results and your safety throughout the procedure.

Spanish Patients

Yes, we do have Spanish-speaking staff available.
